Fifty Shades of Yellow

Purple is my favorite color, and it always has been.  But I love yellow for its cheerfulness.

It’s my daughter Bea’s favorite color.

And she wears it well, don’t you think?

She isn’t the only one.

Whether yellow comes as a tasteful accent…

…a warm background…

…a pleasing bit of contrast…

…or a big splash of color…

…Ma Nature wears it well too.

…and so do her children.

We’ve borrowed this sunny hue from nature to brighten our homes on the outside…

…and on the inside too.

It shines a cheerful light through the darkness…

…and lifts our spirits.

It warms us from the inside out.

Yellow comes in many eye-catching colors and goes by many names…goldenrod, schoolbus, taxicab yellow…

Maize, saffron, lemon…mmm, yellow never smelled so good.

Yellow means different things to different people.  Does this signal mean approach slowly?  Or go very very fast?

It might depend on whether you’re coming…

…or going.

Is it animal, vegetable, or mineral?

Never mind.   That’s neither here nor there.

Just love yellow too! This uplifting post just what I needed this morning.

    1. THank so much for the visit. It’s always good to hear from you.

  3. I’ve come to appreciate yellow over the years. My little girl was obsessed with all things “lellow” for years. I find it particularly nice against grey.

    1. HI Elizabeth,
Isn’t it interesting how kids are so drawn to a color? My son loved orange and, like your little girl, Bea preferred “‘ellow.”
Thanks so much for the visit. Just curious–what’s your favorite color?

  4. Lovely and funny images. I feel the same. Purple is my favorite color too but yellow is such a vibrant positive color. It was my mothers favorite color.

    1. Remember when it was nearly impossible to find anything in purple? It was just not a mainstream fashion choice. I can’t wear yellow, but I have an appreciation for its warm and brightness and cheerfulness.
      Thanks for the visit, Jo.

  5. scillagrace says:

Yellow and purple are complementary colors, technically, are they not? I always said purple was my favorite color, and my bedroom was always painted yellow. I need the warmth and light for my mood. What wouldn’t I give to see a dandelion right now?!

    1. Hi Scilla,
It might be no coincidence that I moved into a house with purple fixtures and aqua tile in the front bathroom! I painted the walls and cupboards in there magenta, violet, and aqua, just for fun. But the kitchen is two shades of yellow, the walls of my bedroom are sage (and the accents are purple), and my living room is an orangey sienna. I guess I just love color.

      1. scillagrace says:

        Wow! You do love color!

  6. Naomi says:

Yellow is also my favourite colour! Everything looks better with yellow!

    1. I can’t wear it, because it makes my skin look jaundiced, but I love it on my walls, in my garden, and in a sunset!
Thanks so much for weighing in on this, Naomi–I didn’t realize how many people out there love yellow!

  7. Wonderful photographs Naomi. And your daughter is just so lovely!
Yellow is, and always has been, my favourite colour, and when we had a home I painted the living room walls in a faux Tuscan yellow finish. I spent weeks experimenting with colours and textures and finally got it just right. It was such a warm room.

    1. Thank you, Alison! Thank you so much for your generous response. I can’t wear yellow, but Bea can even pull off looking good in a banana suit!
Your home sounds like it was really beautiful. For warmth and richness, yellow wins.

  8. Wonderful post. Bright and cheery. Happy color yellow everywhere.

    1. Thanks for stoping by, Richard! I guess you have lots of bright cheery sunshine in California.

  9. Ruth says:

My spirits uplifted and I’m feeling cheerful and warm after reading your excellent post this morning,Naomi. Need a scratch and sniff for the spices you mentioned- mmmm. Loved the rhythm of the line of cabs. Nice!

    1. I love the idea of a scratch ‘n’ sniff blog! thanks so much for adding your voice to the conversation. It’s always good to hear from you.

  10. My favorite color is purple as well but I still love yellow because no matter where I see it, how little or a lot, yellow always, always makes me smile before I even know I am.
I have a 36″ square canvas with a huge yellow rose. Each time I look at it, I smile and am pulled into its centre.
This is a wonderful post, Naomi. You have a wonder flair for words and photos sustaining each other. Thanks for giving me my morning smile. Have an awesome weekend.

    1. Thank you, Tess, for your encouragement. I love your image of the huge yellow rose. I’ve always preferred them to red ones, don’t know why, with just a blush of pink at the edges.

  11. Sweet and fanciful. Love the “dancers.” We are just painting our living room a deeper shade of yellow for the warmth and glow. We also recently painted our tiny bathroom a brighter yellow for its uplifting cheer. And don’t I plant marigolds in my yard every year, wherever I am? I never considered yellow a favorite color but there you are. It is what it is!

    1. Hi Lee,
Nice! That should warm things up a bit, and from what I hear, you could use it up there in the frozen northlands! You are building yourselves a warm cozy nest! Do you think we like it because we grew up in a house with a yellow kitchen? I kind of remember you used to favor orange. Do you still?
      Love,
      Naomi

That is just what I needed this morning lovely shades of Yellow to brighten the day ahead. My world is Blue and White 🙂

    1. Dear Eunice,
Thanks for the lovely ray of sunshine this morning. Believe it or not, I woke up to a world of blue and white too! Our yard is covered in snow! It won’t last, and will be gone by tomorrow, but I can see how a person would need a good dose of yellow to stay warm!

      1. nutsfortreasure says:

🙂 Enjoy your short lived nature scene if only mine lasted but a day 🙂

      2. I hear you! My sister lives in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and says there was a week of high temperatures below zero! I don’t think I could stand that.

      3. nutsfortreasure says:

Went out today for some walking on ice and it still amazes me each year they pull their trucks and bob house out and they loose a few each year today planes were landing and taking off on the lake during the huge fishing derby 🙂 brrrr Photos soon 🙂 I remember trucking up where your sister is and into Fargo and northern MN -70F without windchill could not shut off the rigs or they would never start till spring lol I live in a balmy area 🙂

  13. I love yellow, but yellow doesn’t love me, at least as a color to wear. 😦 I have to enjoy it other places. Love the sunflowers. There’s nothing more cheerful than a field full of their beautiful faces. As for the yellow traffic signal, you’re exactly right–it means two disparate things!

    janet

    1. Hi Janet,
I hear you! If I wear yellow I look jaundiced, but my kitchen looks warm and even the yellow walls look happy!
Thanks so much for the visit, and for taking the time to share your thoughts. It’s always good to hear from you.

  14. Arlene says:

Purple is my favorite too but who doesn’t love the cheerful color yellow? These pics warmed me up! And I can use some warming as I sit under a blanket and look out the window to yards covered in a few feet of frozen snow 🙂

    1. Thanks for adding your voice to the conversation, Arlene. I always love to hear what is a person’s favorite color. I can’t believe it, but even in Seattle we have snow today! I doubt it will last, but I love your idea about a warm blanket and a window view. I’m enjoying the view wrapped up in my big purple fuzzy bathrobe!

  15. Me too, I love yellow and am thinking of reupholstering my furniture in yellow! Feels like Spring is just around the corner with its daffodils yellowing up the world x

    1. That would be a lovely bright and welcoming room to walk into! I am looking forward to spring. We are almost there! Thanks so much for the visit, and for adding to the conversation!

  16. Carol says:

A bright sunny post is so welcome on a dreary winter’s day. Thank you.

    1. Thank you, Carol. I am picturing you in your newly arranged living room, maybe with a bowl of popcorn on your lap, wrapped up in a warm blanket, probably with one of the girls snuggled up against you, and watching the winter Olympics!

  17. viveka says:

Thanks for brighten my day up ….. I love yellow it’s like having the sun down on our earth … but I can’t wear yellow expect mustard yellow – it is the most happy color of them all. A fantastic gallery, Naomi. The sunflowers are one of the picks … and the other is the umbrella. A warm big smile is now on my face, thanks a million.

    1. Dear Viveka,
Thank you for putting a smile on my face! I’m so glad you like the umbrella–I wasn’t sure I should include it, and now I’m very glad I did! Wishing you lots of sunshine!

  18. Amy says:

That’s a beautiful array of yellows! Great shot of the sun!

    1. Thanks so much, Amy!

  19. aschlady says:

      1. aschlady says:

        You’re most welcome 🙂

  20. Great yellow pics. And I’m not just saying that because my favorite color is yellow. 😉

  21. A really lovely post, Naomi.Yes, yellow is such a happy colour. Love all of your images, but my favourite has to be #9. So cute! 🙂

    1. HI Sylvia
I love that photo too. We took that at the botanical gardens in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Bea looks like a little garden fairy! We were so taken by the beauty of that profusion of Black-eyed Susans that we came home and planted them in our yard.
Thank you for the visit, and for sharing your thoughts.

  22. Red Hen says:

What an inspirational post. Wonderful photos too.And yes, famille Baltuck look like a cheery, happy lot. Could it be from all that sunshine yellow?;-)

    1. Thanks so much for your very generous response. THis was a fun one to put together. I feel lucky to have a couple of kids who generate their own sunshine!

      1. Red Hen says:

Oh you know the one about the apple and the tree?!

  23. Beatrice Garrard says:

    Hurrah! Yellow!

    1. Dear Bea,
No one can wear banana yellow quite like you can, my dear! Thanks for the visit, and for being such a wonderful subject (and good sport)!
      Love you so much!
      Mom

      1. Beatrice Garrard says:

        Thank you! Love you too

    1. Perfect! Thanks for adding not only your voice to the conversation, but Donovan’s as well! Best wishes to you, Roy!

  24. . . . and yellow and purple look very nice together, too! ❤

    1. I love yellow and purple together. (For some reason it makes me thing of chocolate eggs). Thanks so much for the visit, Mary. I hope you are staying warm. We had SNOW in SEATTLE last night!!

      1. Snowy here as well . . . and many animal prints on that snow . . . stay warm and safe.

  25. diannegray says:

So bright and beautiful, Naomi! 😀

  26. Dorota Rahn says:

Beautiful inside out. Are you sure you don’t work for a calendar publisher?

    1. Hello, my dear Dorota!
Thank you for your beautiful comment–so good to hear from you!
How are you weathering this winter weather? I bet the twins are out building snowpeople in your yard at this very minute!
I hope to see you soon!
      Love,
      Naomi

  27. What a bright cheerful collection! Perhaps it will draw spring to us 🙂

    1. Thank you, Carol. We’re almost there! I had to go outside and photograph my purple primroses covered with a last gasp snowfall, but it’s already starting to melt.

  28. Thom Garrard says:

    1. It’s never too late! I know a really cute one who might pose in his yellow duds for me. Maybe even tomorrow!

  29. Thank you, Naomi, for all that cheering yellow to brighten grey old February! I’ve only ever once fallen in love with a car — a yellow Mercedes with black smoked glass windows, black leather seats, and walnut dashboard. Mister wouldn’t allow me to have it (even though it was second hand) and made me have something sensible. A bright red jaguar that I hated and couldn’t park. Sensible, my foot 😀 He just fancied it himself and knew I wouldn’t want to drive it. One day, I will have a yellow car, as it is the best colour for transport. That being said, my favourite colours to wear are purple, red, and deep pink.

    1. Oh, Sarah,
I wish I could get you that car! True love is something you need to go with when it strikes you. I think the yellow would complement your purples and reds.
Thanks so much for sharing a real live love story today. Just think, Sarah, we are halfway through February, which means springtime is just around the next bend!

  30. Primerinamer says:

yellow and pink is my fav color, and i think the banana costume is too cute, where do you bought it? :p

    1. Hi! Bea and I were in Hawaii, and we found the banana suit at a local thrift store. Why would anyone want to give it away? Thanks for sharing your comment. It’s good to meet you!

  31. I don’t think I have a favourite colour, but I do have a pair of bright yellow curtains next to my bed!

    1. Hi Kate,
That would be a pretty sight to wake up to. I wear a lot of purple, and I think it is my favorite color, but every color has its place in the world, both expected and unexpected (likethe ocean that somehow took on an aqua and lavender color in Mexico). When I recognize how perfect it is, for that moment it could almost be my favorite color, from the oranges and reds in a sunset to the perfect green of new spring buds to the surprising blue of Paul Newman’s eyes!

  32. TBM says:

It is such a cheerful color. My first bedroom had yellow walls and for years it was my favorite color. Now it’s purple 😉 But I still think it’s happy and perky.

    1. It’s funny how many people have both yellow and purple as their favorite and second favorite, though they are opposite one another on the color wheel. Nice complements to each other.
I was always purple everything, but now my bedroom is purple and green, and my living room is Sienna, to go with the stone fireplace, but I love the warmth of it. I guess tastes change too as we age.
Thanks so much for the visit.

  33. Yellow! Love it! To cheer us at sunrise and sunset and the in-between times. I think yellow may be God’s favorite. 🙂 Thank you for sharing your wonderful photos, Naomi! ♥

    1. Dear Paula,
I certainly do find it cheering. A lovely way to wake us up and tuck us in at night!
Thanks so much for the visit!

  34. M says:

so bright in such a cold dim day. LOVE IT!!!

    1. Me too! Today we had the first sunny day in forever. I’m okay when we have gray days, especially if it’s not raining. But when the sun comes out, it really is cheering.
      Happy Valentine’s Day!

  35. ShimonZ says:

Loved the different views of yellow. It is often too powerful for me… cut I like it best when coming from a flower… beautiful post.

    1. Dear Shimon,
Thanks for stopping by. I always love to hear from you. Your comment was really interesting to me–I have never thought of a color as too powerful, but I can see how that would be. For me that color would be really bright pinks.

  36. cyardin says:

I had to do a double take on the butterflies. Great collection!

    1. Thanks so much! The amazing thing about the butterflies was that every minute or two, they would all rise up and flutter about looking like a Disney cartoon, before settling back in as a group. Sometimes there would be several kind of butterflies all together. They gather to eat the mud on the banks of the Amazon to get the minerals they need.

  37. Wow. I love the butterflies. I could hardly believe my eyes. My own favorite color is purple and I love yellow. Wonderful photos, Naomi. Hey, link your blog on your Gravatar page along with your website. I always have to Google your name to get here. This time, I checked out your website. And, I absolutely love the picture of you on the second page. The order page, I think. I like the first page one too. 🙂

    1. Hi George,
I will try and figure out how to do that. Sorry you are having trouble getting here. Thanks so much for checking out the website!
I was just telling Cyardin that the amazing thing about the butterflies was that every minute or two, they would all rise up and flutter about looking like a Disney cartoon, before settling back in as a group. Sometimes there would be several kind of butterflies all together. They gather to eat the mud on the banks of the Amazon to get the minerals they need.

  38. BTW, I love the picture of the girls! I always recognize Bea. She’s so funny and smiling always. And pretty too, like her mom.

  39. Dear George,
Thank you so much. My kids are my joy. Hey, how is the Boy doing? I bet he’s growing up fast, as kids do these days. (SO much faster than I ever did!)
It’s great to hear from you, and I appreciate your visit. Happy Valentine’s Day.

  40. Sunshine comes in many shapes and form. Today, you gave us tons of reasons to smile about. Thanks.

    1. I love your very poetic response, “Sunshine comes in many shapes and form.” Thanks for giving me a reason to smile. Best wishes to you and your sweet family!

  41. Madhu says:

The world would be a bleak and dreary place without yellow!! Lovely interpretation Naomi.

  42. Dear Madhu,
So true! I can’t imagine a world without sunshine and daffodils! Thanks so much for your visit, and for taking the time to leave a thoughtful comment.

  43. Isn’t it incredible how many shades of yellow there are?
I am a big fan of purple, too. The highest color of the chakra.
    It balances me.
After this post, I will look at yellow in a very different way.
You’ve posted a very nice selection of yellows.
    Issy

    1. Thank you, Issy. I had to stop once and decide about orange and yellow. I can’t wear them, but it made me realize that, although I can’t wear them and wouldn’t hang them as curtains, I would be very sad without them. Every color of the rainbow is my favorite color when it’s in its proper setting–the sky, the trees, the sunset, the garden…

  44. Subhan Zein says:

Your daughter Bea is hilarious. I hope her study goes well.

    1. HI Subhein,
Thank you! Bea is a very sweet funny kid. She is doing very well at school–history and creative writing are her interests. So good to hear from you!

  45. pattisj says:

If there’s no green showing up yet, yellow will certainly do. My mom always painted her kitchen a sunny yellow. I always enjoy your posts, Naomi.

    1. HI Patti,
Thanks so much for the kind words. We grew up in a house with a yellow kitchen too, which I find very cheerful. And it looks like green is on its way. Happy springtime!

  46. I do believe I’m going to be seeing yellow for the rest of the day!………..lol

  47. t2van says:

I absolutely love the photo of the field of sunflowers….do you sell your images?…it’s calling to me…

And I love how you craft a story with your photos – it makes me want to just play with photos all day. Thank you for prompting playfulness!

    🙂 Terri

  48. Cee Neuner says:

    Wonderful entry. Great yellows.

  49. Such cute and beautiful photos. I can’t believe you were able to find so many yellow shots! Thank you so much for sharing 🙂
